I totally want a second dog now

So the first day we were here, Zoey peed ALL THE TIME. Talk to her nicely? Pee. Speak to her sternly? Pee. Ignore her? PEE! And along with the incessant piddling, we had her leaping atop Licorice at every possible opportunity, and Licorice spending a lot of time making adorable little cranky-snarly sounds to try to tell Zoey to back off.

The second day, I guess my dad found a little cork and Zoey stopped peeing everywhere. She only spent half the day pouncing all over Licorice, and much time was spent with both dogs lazing in front of the stove, roasting their tender underbellies. Eventually there was some running around and bouncing of balls and the dogs were VERY NEARLY playing together, and then Licorice apparently tried to kill Zoey’s Most Favoritist Toy—a very flat raccoon—and ZOEY snarled at LICORICE. Most surprising. And hilarious.

This morning, Zoey was put outside while Licorice ate her breakfast. And then Licorice went and laid down by the door to wait for Zoey to come back in. I suspect we’ve reached a truce. So I made Otto get out the camera.

I called to them and they came running.

I may have mentioned that this particular pair would, in fact, make the absolute perfect “Dog and emergency back-up dog” pair.

I had a ball. This was very exciting.

Licorice says it’s no fair, Zoey always cheats. (Here “cheats” = “is so much bigger she gets it before Licorice realizes it’s been thrown.”)

Later, Zoey reminded Licorice not to touch her raccoon.

Licorice got the last laugh, though…

… because Zoey’s not allowed on the furniture.

I’m telling you, the two of them are better than television.

I love Dave Barry! You need a backup dog…

  3. Susan

We have a 17 pound dog and a 108 pound dog; two dogs are totally better than one.

  4. Dr. Liz

Two Goldendoodles, both under the age of 4. They wear each other out. Two is definitely better than one! :-)

LOL Mir. Thanks for the adorable pics :)

Our #1 dog is so poorly behaved that we worry that he’d teach the hypothetical dog bad habits. Or that could be us.

Perk-floppy ears SLAY me. It is a Very Good Thing that I have iron self control because man are those puppies reminding me that dogs are one of life’s greater joys…

Awwww….Zoey looks just like my dearly departed Kinsey!!! I’m a big fan of the 2-dog system – go for it!!!

Damn, I miss puppies -and black puppies- and black LAB puppies. Zoey is adorable and kind of stole my heart…Licorice is, well, Licorice…

Two dogs become a pack and learn to live together really well. Then miss each other when one of them is gone.

I believe ALL dogs need a buddy. I mean, dogs are best friends. ;o) But what I’ve learned is get little dogs because they make little messes.

Just remember: puppies are only fun when they’re someone else’s. Otherwise, it’s your furniture they’re eating!

So… which one is the emergency back-up dog? :)

My computer monitor just warned me it’s in danger of exploding from a cuteness overload.

  16. Karate Mom

Oh my goodness! Both of those dogs are so cute!!!!!!!!!

  17. Chris

Funny how big Licorice looks when she is not around Zoey. ZMOG, both of them are so cute. Makes me miss mine that is until I realize that I don’t have anyone to watch him/her when I travel.
Thanks for the pics, too cute!

That is a LOT of black furry cuteness, right there! The first and last pictures are my favorites. MY does Licorice personify smugness as she sits on the sofa.

  19. Therese

Those two are absolutely the cutest together! Licorice definitely needs a baby brother or sister, Mom!!

One dog, good. Two dogs, much better. 3 dogs, loads of fun. 4 dogs, that’st a lot of dogs.
Or so it works in my house. But I need me some dog. I’ve tried a cat, and the cat is not a dog.

Aren’t dogs fun? I actually spent 40 minutes at the groomer this morning sans my dogs waiting for my favorite dog in the world to show up (other than mine, of course). Murphy is the coolest goldendoodle you ever saw. He is adorable! And I absolutely think you should get another dog. I always have at least three around.

  22. Daisy

Well, I keep adding rabbits to our home. We can’t seem to stay bunny-free for long!

I’m curious to what Otto thinks of the two dog system. With a playmate for Licorice, she might be less prone to pester you whilst you work. Of course, with a playmate they could BOTH pester you whilst you work….
