Hoping for fewer repercussions

So, my dad and stepmom arrived last night, and today we’re going to a little family reunion gathering. I know that people usually dread these things, but I’m actually looking forward to it. My father comes from a largish family. But for various reasons, I haven’t met most of these people.

Last night we were sitting around chatting after I put the kids to bed, and the phone rang. I answered, and heard “Aloha!”

My dad’s brother and his wife live in Hawaii. Obviously we don’t see each other very often.

We’re going to see them today, and they’d called to discuss plans. We swapped pleasantries. (How are you? Fine! How are YOU?) It suddenly struck me how long it’s been since I’ve seen my aunt and uncle.

“Hey, when was the last time I saw you?” I asked.

In stereo—one through the phone at my ear and the other sitting on the adjacent couch—my uncle and my father both answered, “Your wedding.”

There was a pause.

“Well!” I said, brightly, “we all know how well THAT worked out! Here’s hoping that tomorrow goes a little bit better!”

My family reunion was two weeks ago. It was too big. My dad is the youngest of nine children and my grandpa was the 5 of 13. And by golly there were 300 people there. I hope your get together was smaller and more fun!

I hope you have a wonderful time!

I often think that you would be a very amusing person to know in real life. :-)

of course, the opposite could also be true – your uncle jinxed your marriage by showing up. If you have any hope of making it work with Otto, for gods sake, don’t go to the reunion.

    just a thought.

I was thinking the same as Bob — I would avoid making any life committments around your uncle, lest they have been the jinx.

Just looking out for Otto on this one ;)

Girl, the way things have been goin’ for you lately…..BE CAREFUL

  9. Otto

Otto believes in self-determination, so he’s not too worried about a Hawaiian uncle. In fact, one of Nephew Otto’s favorite (grand) uncles lived in Hawaii and, on the one chance he got to visit, had a most wonderful time. Holidays with relatives can be dicey, but getting to spend Thanksgiving with an aunt and uncle and five second cousins, most of whom you’ve never met, on Oahu was an amazing experience.

One lesson learned: Otto can’t surf.

P.S. – For the record, Otto was also at Mir’s wedding. So let’s not fault the guests, eh?

    Oh have fun Mir.

I have never been to my own family reunion. 1) it’s in West Virginia and I’m in Oregon. 2) I’ve never been invited so I never know when it is (I blame my dad.) 3) my mom’s family is closer, but they don’t talk to each other (that is a good thing.)

So, if Otto was a guest at the wedding, maybe Otto was the jynx?

P.S. this 3rd person referential stuff only works for Elmo.

    Otto is funny.

    That’s all.

Otto, are there any more of you? I live a lot closer to you than Mir, so , um..nobody would have to FLY.
    :D
Teasing, mostly. Glad Mir has you.

Otto talks about himself in the third person.

    That is hott.

You know what I got from Otto’s post? He and Mir are cousins…Well, I guess whatever works for them.
