Keeping me grounded

By Mir
January 9, 2013

My Prednisone-fueled pace for 2013 continues unabated. I don’t know that I’m actually accomplishing anything beyond what a normal, functioning adult should be doing—possibly the last year has left me with a bar that is not so much low as it is smashed-on-the-ground and therefore easy to clear—but it certainly FEELS like I am Getting Crap Done in various areas of my life.

And yet, between cleaning things and getting work done and spending hours on the phone with the government (that’s… a whole ‘nother story for another time, and it shall be called Medicaid May Actually Be A Unicorn) and Getting Healthy Again (This Time With Feeling) and on and on and so forth, I have been a bit lax about doing some of those… shall we say… elusive “nice things for myself.”

So today, I did. I went out to lunch with a friend! And on my way home I stopped in at a consignment shop where I brought some stuff a looooong time ago, and lo, I had credit to spend, and before I knew what was happening, my “find a sensible black purse” mission had been supplanted by “OOOOH PURPLE!” and I was walking out of there with a “magenta leather” bag I clearly needed to have. LOOK AT ME, being wild and crazy. A purple purse! I may as well dance naked in the pale moonlight! (No, I am not getting out often enough; why do you ask?) [Edited to add: I did some research because I am NOT a Purse Person and was curious what I’d gotten. It’s this Coach Alexandra, from a 2009 (?) line.]

When I picked up Monkey from school, he pointed to my new bag on his seat and said, “What’s that?”

“My new purse!” I said, ever so pleased with myself. “It’s my favorite color!”

“You’re dressed head to toe in your favorite color,” he observed, with a small smirk. This was perplexing, as I’m not wearing any purple today at all. I’m wearing blue jeans and a black shirt. My face must’ve registered my confusion, because with a sweep of his arm, he proclaimed, “BRUISE. Now that you have that bag, the look is complete.”

So, uh, apparently my favorite color is “bruise.” He’s not wrong. (But I did enjoy that hour or so of feeling all sassy before I was schooled….)

That is too funny. I needed that laugh because today is not a good parent kid day around here :)

  2. Brenda

Haha! I never would have made that connection. All you need is a little bit of green or yellow on your socks or shoes to be thoroughly complete.

  3. Kim

Ouch! But purple purses are a must have item ~ both of mine broke and I am on the lookout for another.

I turned down my very own Prednisone Week of Wonder and Glory (poison ivy. Yep, in January. Yep, got it inside while sitting on the couch. Only thing I can figure is the cat brought it in. *shrug*) only because I remember all too well the Four Days of Crushing Withdrawal, Why Can’t I Just Take It Forever? from a few years ago. So I’m vicariously living through you and your Prednisone high.

  5. Clarity

Sometimes (often) an hour of sassy is more than I get all week! besides, one of my favorite thigs about you is that rock your bruises in so many beautiful ways :)

  6. Rocky Mountain Woman

take the sassy where you can get it is my motto!

  7. Sharon

How could anyone not LOVE that kid? Seriously, he is awesome.

  8. Sheila

He might just not be my favorite kid any more. (Ah, who am I kidding? He’s still adorable BUT YOU DO NOT LOOK LIKE A BRUISE.)

  9. Rosie

Prednisone. Been there. As were the bruises, headaches, and depression (I was on it a long time).

Rock your purple purse! I always used to say my favorite color is green, but my four year old is emphatic that it’s really purple. I took a look at my wardrobe and realised that he’s probably right. A solid third of my clothes are purple, and my purse is purple, too.

That boy? He is VERY witty. I love him.

  12. karen

    LOL!!!… wiseguy :-)

  13. laura

Man, I would have never come up with that observation. Too funny.

PURPLE! Is there any other color?I adore my purple purse. And the bruise thing – that is one way cool kid!

  15. Laura

That kid just amazes me. When he writes a book, I’m reading it.

Pretty sure he earned the “teen” after his “thirt” now….that is absolutely a teen comment!

  17. Korinthia Klein

Ha! Monkey is too funny. Bruise. (Ha!)

  18. Anna

    Hilarious!

  19. Varda (SquashedMom)

Well, obviously PURPLE is your favorite color as it is clearly vastly superior to all the other colors out there, Monkey’s sassy comments notwithstanding. (And yes, purple IS my favorite color, thanks for asking, has been since i was 6 – tho green is nice too.)

Darn it, I’ve already petered out on my New Year momentum. I think I’m in trouble here.

Just glad you treated yourself, and to something gluten-free this time! The only side-effect was sassiness from your kid, I guess that’s better than the eczema.

  22. Michelle

Wait, wait, wait. . .you didn’t say anything about green around the edges and most bruises are green around the edges. Thing is, though, I’m not cool enough to rock a purple purse (though I’d like to be) so what do I know?

  23. Ali

I just treated myself to a very fancy plum (see, not even a pedestrian purple, so thus, fancy) wallet that I LOOOVVVEEEE. I get ridiculously cheery when I get an oportunity to pull it out of my purse and marvel at it’s prettyiness.

  24. Lindsey P

Gotta lurv a SWEET purple purse from a consignment store! Now I want to see pictures of it!

  25. Krista

    I love reading your website!

  26. Kathy

Your purse is SOOOO pretty! And the fact that you got it at a consignment store is even BETTER! The hubs got me a “cordovan” purse for my birfday and it goes with EVERYTHING! I love it … but I’m a little jelly over yours!!

Rock it in GREAT health … with NO bruises!!!

    xoxoxo

  27. Cheryl

LOVE the purse!! I would totally carry that! and Monkey is brilliant. I would never have made that connection!

  28. liz

Alas, it’s not plastic, so you can’t just call yourself “Lily

I brought two Coach bags to consignment that belonged to my mother-in-law when she passed away. I decided that I wasn’t going to use them, brand notwithstanding (and that is quite a brand), because I just didn’t like them. I would never have chosen them, and there was nothing about them that said “I am a super-special bag” either.

BUT, your magenta Coach bag? I like. A lot. That is a serious score. You can’t really expect Monkey to get it, anyway, because he is A Boy.

Enjoy your purse! Purple is the new black!

  31. Heather

I love it. Kids will always bring you back down to reality. Like when I get all dressed up in something slinky and mine ask if there’s a baby in my tummy (and no, there isn’t!). Great blog, I’m new to blogging and just discovered you!

  32. Lisa Kay

OH! If you ever decide that you’re tired of that purse and want to do away with it…I’LL TOTALLY BUY IT FROM YOU!! I love purple!

  33. Becky

Good for you, Lady! I’m trying to do the same thing for myself this year! (Not collect bruises, but do more for myself!)

  34. Cele

Who said men aren’t able to mix colors?

  35. Beverly

Haha! I love the way that kid’s mind works!

Also, extremely cool purse. I’m very jealous.
