I grew up with the Blues

Does Kraft still run those commercials for their macaroni and cheese where kids are singing about how they’ve got the blues and they need the blue box, please? It seems like I haven’t seen one in a long time. Then again—thanks to the miracle of the DVR—I don’t watch many commercials, these days. So who knows.

Today I’m thinking about comfort food over at Off Our Chests; specifically, I’m thinking about my relationship with Kraft macaroni and cheese. (And one could argue that the blue box, although iconic, doesn’t actually contain food, though that’s another discussion, entirely.) I’m wondering if you have a similar food memory from childhood, and if it still has the power to take you back.

Come on over and chime in, won’t you?

Not having to watch commercials is the number-one reason why I pink-puffy-heart our DVR. YAY for fast-forward!

When I came back to the US after living in Europe – with no TV – I found myself, after turning on the television, literally backed away into a corner in horror at the way the people were telling me About! Their! Hemorrhoids! And! Personal! Hygiene!

Also? I didn’t actually taste Kraft dinner stuff until I was nearly 12. Then I forced every kid I babysat to have that for dinner just so I could nick the leftovers. I still haven’t confessed that to my mum…

The heavens opened and angels sang the day I saw that Nakumatt (grocery store chain in Nairobi) had Kraft Mac and Cheese. Unfortunately it only lasted about six months, now they don’t even have the generic Magictime brand. *sigh*

    Mir,
Would you please post (or email me) your homemade Mac and cheese recipe?
    Thanks,
    Margie (a loyal reader)

Margie: Lately I am absolutely loving Alton Brown’s recipe, though I do tinker with it a bit—I find his sauce to pasta ratio a bit heavy (I use more pasta), and I cut down some on the mustard. But the brilliance of simmering a bay leaf in the milk cannot be overstated. It’s delicious!!

I have never eaten Kraft Mac & Cheese, or any packaged Mac & Cheese.

I did used to make my own white sauce, add cheese and smoked salmon to it, yum.

With food allergies ruling my kitchen, there is no pasta products in my house at all. Sad, I know.

I ♥ ♥ ♥ Kraft Mac and Cheese homestyle. It’s delicious! I don’t care about the box stuff, though. If you haven’t tried it, you really should!

I love me some Kraft Mac & Cheese. It’s my go to when I’m feeling down or particularly lazy. I know how to make my own cream sauce. I know how to make frittatas, quiches, and all sorts of fantastic dishes. And yet, I love mac & cheese. I think I always will. Both the powder type and the deluxe. I have decided that this is not something to be ashamed of.

Do you remember Koogle? The peanut butter laced with layers of jelly – and probably trace elements of arsenic. How I miss that Koogle. And I Can’t Believe How Good Your Hair Smells. What that it? Can’t remember. Might be some arsenic residue from the Koogle messing me up.

My go- to day before payday dinner when my kids were little and we were poor was a box of Kraft Dinner mixed with a can of cheap tuna. A box of frozen peas added to the mix was a luxury. Thirty some odd years later I treat myself to a little Easy Mac every once in a while!
